It is important because you need to find the right source for an effective fix and it is hard because sometimes water can enter from one place, runs down and then starts dripping from another place in your ceiling. A bad ceiling can give you signs such as rust or water stains. Look out for those signs.
Roof leak detection may require a trip to your attic
If you have an attic go up there on a rainy day and look for the leak. Bring up a flashlight as it will help you, water reflects light. Mark the location of the leak and then on a sunny day go up on your roof. Have someone in the attic tapping on the mark, perhaps with a broom handle so that you will know the location from the exterior. How bad is the dame? Is it the shingles, the roofing cement or something else?
There are many places which you can check for water damage. See the boots and rubber seals, air vents, exhaust fan flashing, the ridge cap, check your gaskets around pipes, the chimney flashing, the gutters, the downspouts, the dormer valleys and your shingles. You should make sure that there aren’t any missing or damaged shingles.
If you don’t want to wait for the rain, you can use also use a garden hose and run water over your roof. Don’t use a lot of water but just enough to see the drops leaking inside. Meanwhile, someone should be in the attic
